Update Roll Back Information
Some updates are System updates only and do not touch your database.
What happens when installing a Full System & Database Update
When a full update starts installing, a copy of your data files is placed in a folder called "Upgrade Backup", this is located in the GA4 install folder, which depending on your system, is located in either one of the following folders:
- Win: C:\Program Files\Garage Assistant GA4\Upgrade Backup
- Win: C:\Program Files (x86)\Garage Assistant GA4\Upgrade Backup
- Mac: Applications/Garage Assistant GA4/Upgrade Backup
These files are created by the installer and are separate to regular backups created within GA4.
Their purpose is to add a secondary safety layer, in case something goes wrong during the update.
The installer then replaces your files with the new version (empty) files and imports your data from the last backup file created at the start of the update process.
What if something goes wrong?
If something goes wrong during the import stage, such as records not being imported, GA4 will detect the issue and initiate a rollback procedure. This is necessary to protect your data and to avoid situations of data loss which may go unnoticed for some time.
What if the roll back failed?
If for any reason the rollback fails, please get in touch with us for assistance
The roll back system uses the files created by the installer and sometimes, depending on how your system is set up, may encounter an issue moving the files back into place. Even if something goes wrong with the roll back, we will be able to resolve the issue via remote support either by manually copying the files from "Upgrade Backup" into place or by using your backup files to restore your system back to full functionality.
If you wish to undo the update yourself, please exercise caution when following the below steps:
1. Ensure Garage Assistant is completely shut down.
2. Browse to the Garage Assistant Installation Folder (listed above)
3. Copy the entire folder to your desktop (just in case)
4. Check the date / time of the files to ensure they are recent
5. Copy the two files from the "Upgrade Backup" folder into the main install folder
i.e Copy GA4_UserData.fmp12 or GA4_UserData.GA4 (depending on Single / Network Version)
and GA4_AttachmentData.fmp12 or GA4_AttachmentData.GA4
From: ...Garage Assistant GA4\Upgrade Backup\
To: ...Garage Assistant GA4\
Overwriting where necessary.
Now check GA4 contains the information you expect. If so, you can remove the temporary copy you made to your desktop. If not, get in touch and we will assist.
